Bringing out a Magazine: The inside story

Bringing out a Magazine: The inside story

While celebrating the fifteenth year anniversary of the Ananya magazine, Ananya Sinchana, we feel like sharing the inside story of how and what it takes to run a magazine since we feel close to our readers and subscribers, since you all are like a family to us.
Even to this day, when the Ananya Sinchana is out in the field, ready to be sent out to its readers, the team that works backend to create it, the writers, the creative teams, the packaging team and its chief editor and promoter, Dr Raghavendra, feel a sense of achievement, a strong sense of ownership and an irreplaceable feeling of accomplishment. This is because of the tremendous efforts and passion that goes into creating the magazine every month! Primarily because the magazine is a natural media arm and vehicle to communicate the serious objectives and passion for the cultures and art of the Ananya group.
The process of releasing the magazine is a project in itself!  You’ll be surprised to know how much of planning, prior preparation and co-ordination efforts in getting the magazine out on time and ensuring that it reaches its beloved readers as per the schedule!  The entire process is one filled with many activities that involves the editor planning out a theme every month, communicating the same to the writers, coordinating the event updates, photographs, page dimensions and layouts, upcoming event calendars and much more! But of course in addition to the pressures of having this job done efficiently, it provides a great sense of satisfaction and happiness when you hold the end product in your own hands!
When I spoke to various media journalists, media heads, owners of various kinds of magazines, they were all of the common opinion that it is no small job and actually a herculean task to run a magazine! The magazine has a running and operational cost, it has to develop content that is unique and of great interest and liking of its readers and of course it must ensure that it meets its objectives and vision. Everything is expensive, everything is valuable and it requires a great focus and determination not to dwindle efforts even if support sometimes comes down…“Launching a magazine is not really the tough job,” one senior media person told us…the challenge is in maintaining it and running it month after month and year after year!” in fact
In his own words Dr Ananya Raghavendra says that in the initial years of launching the magazine, it was very difficult to get the process run efficiently because each person was in the learning process, and many such music-based magazines were not known. And of course Internet and technology was not very advanced or accessible to smoothen or aid the process! Everything was paper-dependent! Today the growth of technology and its advancement have added its necessary benefits to the process.
Not only as a contributor but also as a serious music lover and patronizing agent of classical music, when I look at the Ananya SInchana covers at the official library at Dr Raghavendra’s place, I feel my eyes going moist…each of the cover designs and featured musicians and dancers represent a great time and feel of those years…each of the editions speaks volumes about the passion that the artists have given to their art, the sacrifices they have made, the dedication that they have given, their huge fans and admirers! Each a story in itself to be treasured forever!
