HARMONY: Series Introduction

HARMONY: Series Introduction

Have you ever wondered what aspects go in to a zero-performance? Are the lights working on stage, is the sound system intact, do we have sufficient volunteers to pitch in for a sincere cause? Are we encouraging our cultural growth? A PERFECT HARMONY is indeed required for a flawless performance and this article series explores all aspects of this much needed Harmony. By Aparna Shivapura
I would like to introduce this section titled HARMONY featuring a series of articles that explore the various challenges and critical aspects that surround delivering a perfect music conference. You can say from a reader’s perspective, this is a view of the back door, or the back ends that play a major role in ensuring that the performance is perfect. Firstly, as a way of offering our gratitude, we would like to say that ANANYA is eternally thankful to all its back end teams that support and continue to work committed for each and every performance. In the next few series, we will be featuring the views, challenges, concerns and opportunities of various people, experts, artists, technicians and organizations about this topic.
What do you expect when you walk into a dance or music concert or even a theatrical performance? A flawless, error-free performance with no awkward errors live on stage! You come with an expectation that you get value for your time and for your passion. Organizations worked tremendously hard to ensure that the performances meet acceptable standards and go to great extents to ensure that a perfection or at least a near-to perfection is achieved and the audience goes back satisfied and assured that he / she will return again to the show / performance.
Do you know who all are actually involved in a perfect conference?
Shri K M Beliraya has played a critical role in several cultural organizations and has great experience in organizing cultural programs, dance concerts, musical performances and more. In his experience, he says, first of all the right encouragement and support from the society is needed to ensure that these performances continue year-on-year. Several people from technicians, a good platform, a good concert hall, technical support, material, good audio systems…the list of requirements is small but endless. It needs to be perfectly co-ordinated, tested and made-ready prior to the show. Often it takes weeks and months to get things ready, he says!
Audience Etiquettes
From the audience perspective, people need to have greater awareness about the upcoming shows, performances or concerts. Usually in a cultural evening, people tend to come in groups or masses especially when their kin / family member is performing. And the worst part is that they immediately leave the concert mid-way if their children / family members performance is completed. Just like you believe your family member needs encouragement, don’t the others need the support, applaud and encouragement too? Why is it that we forget this? Also there are some concerts when a young music icon is performing and has mixed audiences participating in it. At the end of the performance, sometimes it is noted that very few people will applaud and encourage the performer. When you think back, you realize it is highly de-motivating for the musician especially those new and budding artists who are just about coming up. They may not yet be perfect but they definitely have the potential. So audiences are requested to treat all potential artists the same and encourage them significantly.
The forthcoming series will explore more of this aspect around Audience Etiquettes. If you have any suggestions how we can change this please do share with us.
Artists Initiative
Another key aspect that this series will cover and try to seek solutions for is the initiatives that artists can take to make a performance flawless is that their involved in supporting the back end team or the technicians in a better way. At the end of the day, it is a well-known fact that the artist has the best knowledge and has the perfect idea on how the sound and technical aspects should be rendered. If the artists in future ensure they have a practice session or arrive for a concert with sufficient practice time, they can give enough briefing and instructions to the technicians on how they should handle the audio, mikes, sounds and other aspects related to this.  Sometimes it is found that the technicians might not really have sufficient experience on the lights and sounds should be played. It is always advisable to ensure that enough time is assigned for preparation. That will ensure that a good performance is guaranteed giving no room for mistakes or any kind of embarrassment.
We invite artists to share their good experiences, tips and advice on how this problem can be addressed better.
Support for organizations
There are many innovative methods by which we as responsible citizens support any good organization that is working for causes as this: growth and spread of the greatness of classical music. We can offer our support by becoming volunteers for any such activity related to preparing for a concert. We can offer some good audio-visual systems, good recording instruments, we can help in preparing a good agenda for the program flow. We can co-ordinate and encourage all associated people to come prepared and have a good practice session before the performances. We have heard some remarks that audiences who do not have any experience, idea or knowledge of music advising musicians how to perform, what volume of the instruments to keep and more such things…quite uncalled for, we would say!
In a parallel art framework like a theatre, we have heard theatre persons, organizers and teams share their challenges that some artists and technicians do not turn up for the trials, practice sessions on time! How stressful it must be for the organizers to handle such people related issues in addition to the already existing problems and concerns. Today every field of art faces its challenges and critical concerns, every performance is an achievement and accomplishment in itself, for all those who are involved in it…the artists definitely, the back end teams for supporting and ensuring it is flawless and harmonious, for the audiences who take back a great experience and for the organizers who feel thankful for a effort that was rendered fruitful.
We need to always bear in mind that for people who organize programs, concerts and festivals, it is actually a great colossal task to put things together, to co-ordinate with several people far and wide associated with a performance, associated with an artist, technicians, the venue related aspects are also often over-bearing and so on. Every such successful show must be applauded, encouraged and most importantly supported. Even a small step, a small help, a little co-ordination, a small act of volunteering and more than anything else an open mind from all including the artists, the co-ordinators, the program hosts, the support staff, the technicians and more….please share your views with us and give us your advice, tips and guides on how to ensure all aspects of a performance are well managed is welcome!
