Curious. Deep Diver. Art Creator. Magnetic. Magnanimous. Joy Giver.
H N Suresh, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, in conversation with Aparna S, on all aspects related to art, creativity, depth, opportunities in art, the role of art and much more…
THE “COSMOTIC CONNECT”
These works of art defy logic and imagination. These works of art have crossed borders, seas and mountains. These works of art have gone to realms higher than appreciation and acceptance. They stand in awe, they stand mighty and they stand invincible. They have made a mark. They have created history. And they cannot be recreated. Welcome to the inexplicable, fascinating and intriguing persona of H N Suresh, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Also theatre artiste, renowned art connoisseur and creator, writer, teacher and many more.
When you look at Suresh’s paintings or creations, you will first be silent in awe. This is a feeling, am sure, common to all those who have seen them. No voice, word or sound will come out to express the grandeur, the scale, the audacity, the depth and dimension it brings is unbelievable. It will take you sometime to absorb, understand and comprehend his works of art – be it The Navagraha Paintings, The Zodiacal Paintings or the Ashtadigpalakaru Paintings. Rendered within the ‘four walls’ of a painting is unimaginably complex, presents the cosmic view of our galaxy, stars and planets, our belief system, our cultural milieu, the mystery of the Universe, backed by scientific acceptance and endorsement, all within the contours of a work of art, an artist’s imagination.
I will need another book to complete his biographical profile and achievements. He has donned several roles in his public life, apart from essentially being an artist or an ‘art’ creator. It may be the role in his current stint as Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, or supporting an NGO, or running cultural development courses, teaching students various dimensions of art, creating multiple opportunities for youth to become cultural ambassadors, creating platforms for the talented and needy…creating great synergies across age groups to represent and strengthen the diverse and cultural voice of India. “Richer the culture, richer the heritage, tradition and cultural diversity of India,” says H N Suresh. It is the duty of each and every citizen to protect and promote our culture. A change is required internally to accept and be proud of our culture and heritage. Did you know Sudoku was born in India, 4000 years ago, and was part of the Sankhya tradition? This is just a small example of the huge wealth that our heritage has in its womb and it can enrich the entire world with the same.
How did Astrology, Astro Science, Galaxy, Planets, Stars, Culture, Astronomy become a meaningful fusion in his paintings? “Curiosity chases me,” he says, even now, with a child-like smile and innocence. It’s a journey, an exploration and not necessarily blind belief. Even with this huge stature, he says, “I am at a very small place in this big ocean of knowledge.” Interestingly, what we do not know is much more than the very little that we do. Dive deep and you will see there is a connect between an individual and the stars. A connect with the cosmos does exist. If you ask you shall be led. H N Suresh then brought this synergy, depicted this cosmic connect in his paintings and works of art. His works of art depicts this deep study of the stars, a strange chemistry of astronomy and astrology, confirmed, backed and applauded by no less than senior scientists across the country and the world.
SYNERGY OF ART, CULTURE, AESTHETICS AND SCIENCE
His works actually began years ago with the study of the Navagraha – the position of the Navagraha planets, its representative colors, gems, symbols, yantras and deities are all aspects to study and understand the significance and beyond all, the relevance in our lives. The painting of the Navagraha has pure scientific elements with respect to the placement of the planets and how they are aligned and also has the symbols of the folk art engrained into it. What began as a work of art actually led Suresh to a world completely transformed by the oceanic depth and the fantastic insights and perspectives this has led him to! His works of art have been screened across the world and has built unique and diverse audiences to laud and appreciate his work. In fact he says, “I have just presented the neutral aspects on the canvas.” You step into his paintings and you will have endless things to figure out before you make personal sense of it – the rangolis drawn from folk art, the deities, symbols, gems and colors and much more. “There is a profound message of the cosmos to the humans through the constellations, the connect between man and the celestial world, the eternal world and acknowledging that there is a ‘hrudaya sambandha’ – in fact, if one delves deep to understand, what H N Suresh has painted is the quintessential quest of mankind itself, a journey which mankind has been examining for years without a perfect reply, a quest that remains eternal. His works of art have created opportunities for discussions in large prestigious forums, in academic universities, amongst scholars and scientists, included.
GOAL OF A VALUABLE INSITUTION LIKE THE BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN
“This is the only community in the world to offer something valuable and worthwhile to everybody, be it science, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, art, culture, spirituality, personal development.” The list is endless. Hence an Institution like this takes on this onerous task of spreading our essential and core message to the rest of the world. And he is truly happy and exalted to find acceptance of our culture by people of all ages and communities. The task is infinite, endless but the hope is on! Our worldview is WE ARE ONE FAMILY, THE WORLD IS OUR FAMILY! This is unique to us! Knowledge is nectar, this is basic to the Bhavan. The Bhavan promotes education, culture, literature and everything that is quintessentially Indian – the Bharatiya Value. All Institutions like this and Ananya are working tirelessly to achieve this objective. “We Indians go back to Nature for everything, we celebrate everything – every aspect of our life is commemorated, celebrated and brings people and communities together.”
H N Suresh is uncommon, unique, bold, courageous, inspired and inspirational. He is a great CEO material, a grate critic, good humorist and above all a wonderful HUMAN BEING – HIS TEAM AGREES with me! As a member of the Lalit Kala Academy, Karnataka Sahitya Nritya Kala Academy – there are several high quality programs and concepts that he has pioneered. He has conducted state level festivals and made sure art is spread with the underlying message of education, need to build in educational value with art forms. There are diploma courses for all visual and performing arts.
Never see art in isolation, there is an inseparable connect and good art is always interdependent and intrinsically interlinked. His mind now focuses on music as he wants to explore the deep connect between music and art….i am excited and intrigued to think how this rendition will be!
ART FOR ART’S SAKE, ART TO GIVE JOY, ART TO PERPETUATE
“I made a sincere attempt to bring this essence into a painting – you will have to decipher its simplicity or its complexity.” Felicitations, awards, recognitions haven’t stopped since! Suresh took his time to achieve this, it was a personal journey, a mission, a vision that began years ago and the process of composing and creating was almost a herculean task! Integrating science, art, folk, tradition, celestial, and much more was perhaps truly an experience world apart. “There is no set theory or hypothesis to understand this, this is entirely a personal journey.” Are you willing to traverse into a new world, are you willing to step into an experience that you were unaware of? Are you willing to look at the larger and the deeper view? This in indeed, the calling of true art, art for art’s sake, art to create joy, art to create happiness, a new experience, to change and impact you. To move you. Perhaps to change even.
“An artist should keep growing till he dies…he says astutely.” These paintings remind you of your own stature and size – how small you are against his gigantic art canvas, against his huge stature, his imagination, his courage, his journey, his master strokes and his creation. These also remind you of how much large you can grow in your lifetime. See his paintings, experience them and you will agree. Please reach out to us if you want to see the works of Shri H N Suresh.
