Role of Art Magazines in our Community

Over the last decade, reading habits and reading channels have tremendously changed. In fact, the print world, some say is slowly slowing down with the boom of the Internet. In this age and time with changes adapting the literary scene, what really might be the need, calling and value of Art Magazines in our community? The reality is that on one hand, there is a dearth of art magazines in our societies and on the other, there is a lot of effort and struggle being put by organizations to run, develop and sustain them.
Art magazines can play multiple roles at the same time. First of all, there are a tangible evidence of the music scenario in a community at any given point of time. Secondly, these magazines cover a wide diaspora range of topics related to the music field – introduction of artists, update on the local music scene with updates to how you can be connected to the music world and the happenings around the same, point-of-views, opinions, perspectives from experts on various topics related to the music world and much more.
When you look at the fact file of the music and art world, it’s no better than a factsheet from a research report on things going extinct! Dig deep into the world around you, there seems to be very little space for the Classics! With audiences disappearing and inclination declining to pursue, hold or promote anything to do with our ancient classical heritage. Not to be negative, yes, there are efforts in the right direction but ultimately it will depend on the support and encouragement it gets with citizens, the world over.
What are our reliable and credible options available to reach out to if one is looking for a hand down on music and art literature? Where is a single place, where is a repository of our culture, where we can reach out for information related to art, music and literature? But making an art magazine depends entirely on what you get as content, what you plan as content, how you drive the necessary channels to deliver what you require – right from content, visuals, design, architecture and so on. This is purely the technical side of it but still is important to consider. Usually art journals, magazines and repositories are heavily dependent on the kind of passion its network and team of writers churn out! The passion corner, so to speak. According to some senior magazine owners, creators and connoisseurs, one of the biggest challenges remains to get continuous and a regular stream of articles which covers truly the music and art space in all authenticity and reflects its times.
Another important role is that of education – what better platform to create and promote content that is serious in its cause of development of arts, content that is authentic, well researched, evokes and retains the past with all its glory! A great platform for our youth to look up to for reliable information related to the fine arts. In some good magazines we can find some fantastic content that speaks about the infinite aspects related to music and art.  It is also creates history, a great repository that is reflective of the cultural dimensions of its society.
Another striking aspect that makes magazines successful is the contribution of user generated inputs or content. This is a golden factor that can ensure tremendous success of the magazine but also will show how a society responds to this great cause of perpetuation of music and arts. If citizens spend a little time in qualitative research and contribute their bit – then the world will wake up to new conscientious audience that works towards the development of this cause. This is a great role citizens can play to develop the role that ideally magazines should play.
As a layman, when you flip open an art magazine, you will be surprised to discover so many facets, and aspects and happenings in the music and art world! These magazines are a sincere attempt to get more and more people be part of the music world at one level. At another level, it is in each one of us to contribute indirectly to the cause, development and promotion of the arts. A strong reason, a valuable case and a decided step in the direction of saving the arts, in your own way.  It is high time one rethinks the role of these magazines and see the evolution to a substantial one – engagement, interaction and above all, co-creation. Actually it’s no less than a performance in itself!
