THE MYSURU WADIYAR – CLAN CALENDAR

THE MYSURU WADIYAR – CLAN CALENDAR

The Calendar, a literary Compendium of the Classic Era of Mysore Wadiyars, is a paean bringing to light a bygone era of Mysore Maharajas who left a colossal and magnificent mark on the history of our nation from 1399 - 1970s in Mysore, Karnataka. The Mysore State was in fact, a pioneer and connoisseur for the educational, literary, cultural and artistic temper in the country. Mysore and its rulers were amongst the first to display resistance to the colonial presence in India.
The Mysore State and the Wadiyar or Wodeyars have contributed phenomenally in building the cultural identity of its people. They have historically played an imperative role in empowering education systems, transformation and emancipation of women, development of modern and progressive institutions, industries and healthcare systems.

Each month showcases a Wadiyar King in succession, with a brief synopsis of his life and milieu. The King's accomplishments, course-altering decisions, state development initiatives are presented in a capsule. A lineage which begins with Yaduraya leads up to Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar with a titular monarchy until 1974!
The grandeur, the royalty, the patronage towards culture, history, arts and music by the Wadiyars is unparalleled, to-date. This work celebrates the life, the contributions and the invaluable role they played in building Mysore. Synonymous with cultural antiquity, an unconditional perseverance to preserve the traditional essence of our land, the Wadiyars ensured during each of the reigns, that the core fabric of Mysore was retained and rejuvenated with each succeeding ruler. It goes without saying that each of the Wadiyars faced several challenges, fought battles and waged many a war to retain Mysore as the princely State.

Amongst their significant contributions to building Mysore's identity, it is peremptory to know that many of the Wadiyars were proficient on Indian Philosophy, Ancient Indian Knowledge Systems, Classical Music, Culture, Arts and Literature. A great revival, rejuvenation and robustness touched the cultural zeitgeist of the times, with the patronage of the great Wadiyars. They were keen on the educational impetus, industrialization, modernization and enfranchisement of the land. An era gone by, a clan spanning generations, a cultural horizon that has crafted the unique identity of the Mysore land and its people. The Compendium celebrates each one of the twenty five rulers, the Wadiyars who brought glory and tradition for times immemorial.
A moment of Epiphany
A realization and an awareness of what has been and the waters that have flown to give the soil its fecundity. Every Indian can be proud knowing that its princely past was enriched with greats like the Mysore Wadiyar clan, every one walking on the streets of Mysuru can raise a toast to the erstwhile Kings who brought fame, royalty and a grandeur to the cultural experiences that gives India its rich diversity and panorama.
